Our Sumptuous Homestay Garden - Villa in Ha Noi

Mrs. Hai Ly, one of the partners of Oriental Bridge, offers you a magnificent homestay, her own garden-villa located in a chic district just across the Red River, reputed for its many famous Vietnamese artist residents.

The calm and quietness of the countryside in a small peninsula between the Red River and the Duong River 15-min drive from Old Hanoi.

The villa, 80 m² of sheer elegance, is an extraordinary exact replica of a 18th century Hoi An house, dismantled and reassembled in a beautiful 350 m² private flower garden.

It includes a huge room of extreme beauty, with varnished wood posts and beams and a full-length glass front opening on the garden, which combines an immense living-dining room and an open kitchen. In the back, a very elegant bedroom and bathroom (shower).

The utmost care has been taken in the decoration, supervised by a French architect-decorator : the large room is in wood and stone from Thanh Hoa, used since centuries, in particular for the building of the Imperial Mausoleums of Hue, the floor in Colonial Style tiles, and the bedroom/bathroom floor is in beautiful blond wood; antique furniture and antiquities complete the décor, including a magnificent bronze Buddha.

The equipment is au par with the design and decoration : combined air-condition/heat system in each room, a beautiful Chinese wood stove in the living room, and an elegant glass shower.

Oriental Bridge offers to his guests all the services expected from such a villa :
  • Possibility of traditional Vietnamese meals upon order in advance
  • Bicycles for short rides in the surrounding countryside (pagodas, rice fields, small markets, etc.)
  • Taxi service to the center of Ha Noi

One cannot dream of a more charming house ! We first walk through a beautiful Zen garden inspired from the famous Japanese Ryoan-ji à Kyoto ; at the end of the garden, a large basin with hundreds of plants and a statue of Buddha ; the great surprise is when we enter the house : we discover that it is in fact a one-hundred-year-old Thai house on stilts which the owner has surrounded with stone walls, with its original posts and beams.

The ground floor includes his studio and paintings gallery as well as the kitchen, dining room and bathroom. On the first floor, a huge salon where more of his paintings and numerous antiques are displayed, as well as a superb bedroom with television and hi-fi chain.

Our Gastronomy Restaurant in Ha Noi

Our restaurant Chim Sao  («The Singing Bird ») is one of the very best restaurants in Hanoi, with the well-established reputation of being one of the rare to propose true traditional Hanoian cuisine.

Located on the south of Hoan Kiem Lake in an old colonial house, it is also an art gallery displaying the artworks of young Vietnamese painters. It is a meeting place of the Hanoian intelligentsia, in particular of its most famous artists.

The very eclectic menu proposes delicious specialties such as a salad of lotus flower roots, spring rolls (nem), mountain smoked sausages, grilled pig feet, shrimps in a salted eggs and oil batter, small river shellfish, a large variety of Vietamese fondues (lâu), and mountain sticky rice.

The owners Stan and Phuong also propose an incredible collection of rice alcohols from the northern minority tribes.

The Chim Sao is listed in many travel guides and forums :

Trip Advisor (16 reviews) : Have been here a few times after a local friend recommended it several years back; its robust rusticity, straightforward home-style cooking, atmospheric ambiance, convivial staff, great tastes. It is difficult not to like how they "did up" the restaurant OR what they didn't do to it by leaving much of the old structure, antiquated timber detailing and slightly ruinous interior pretty much intact; lending along the way an air of authenticity, easy charm and laid-back character. That's so true of the upstairs dining room where one gets to eat cross-legged or sprawled atop soft cushions over low tables like any 'regular' peasant folk. Proper tables and chairs are available on the ground floor. Patrons are usually half & half local and expats.

The signature dish from which its name is derived is pigeon - shredded and stir-fried with local spices and eaten with rice crackers very much like an appetizer. For a deep fried cutlet with a difference, try it with the frog meat finely minced along with its bones (to provide a crunch). It is actually quite delicious if you don't mind the calcium supplement. Duck slices fried with coriander and basil is tasty as well as the squid with dill. There is an obvious penchant for the infusion of aromatic herbs into the cooking. Chim Sao serves up several potent home brews which seems very popular especially with the dinner parties upstairs. Great experience!
